A antlion (also spelled with a space "ant lion") is a insect that eats ants.

Ant lion larval.

The larval stage grows up to a half an inch or 1½ cm. long.  In this stage they walk backwards. They live in sand where they make a ice cream cone shaped hole from ½ in. to 3in. (1 ½ cm. to 8cm.) wide.   The reason why they make the pit is to catch dinner.   When an ant or other small insect falls in the pit, the ant lion will use its pinchers to throw sand up to try to cause a landslide.   When the ant lion catches its prey, it will use its pinchers to inject a poison to paralyze the poor ant.   Then the ant lion will suck the juices out of its victim.   When it's finished with the ant, it throws the ant out of the pit.

The adult ant lion looks just like a damselfly except the ant lion has quarter inch long antenna, whereas the damselfly's antenna are just barely visible.   The adults only come out at night and are attracted to light.

The antlion is part of the family Myrmeleontidae ("myrmex" is Greek for ant and "leon" is lion.)
